Combination of Riprap and Submerged Vane as an Abutment Scour Countermeasure

Scour is one of the main causes hydraulic structural failures. The present experimental study examines use riprap, submerged vanes, and a combination these for scour reduction around vertical walls spill-through abutments under clear-water conditions. Specifically, influence placing riprap stones with different apron shapes (geometry) and/or group vanes constant height length on abutment was examined. aim to propose optimum geometry placement (1) reduce edge failure at abutments; (2) prevent shear (no observed wall abutment). results show that using ripraps protection more effective than vanes. However, highest in depth achieved when used together. This arrangement can maximum by up 54% 39% abutments, respectively. Furthermore, selecting appropriate scale ratios reduces required volume 46% 31% abutment, In addition, installation increased stability reduced both tested. Finally, aprons proper scales downstream side also prevents this zone.
